Inside the studio of a stone carver
Forty years of chisels, dust and the patience to wait for the stone.
The studio is a shed at the end of a long garden, white with forty years of dust.
He has carved stone since he was nineteen. He still waits, sometimes for weeks, before making the first cut.
Waiting for the stone
"Every stone has a grain," he told me. "If you fight it, it breaks. If you listen, it tells you where to go."
We spent the afternoon mostly in silence, which he said was the best kind of interview.
