Kyoto has a lantern for every hour: stone ones on shrine paths, paper ones outside tea houses, and the long orange rows at Fushimi Inari.
I walked from dawn until the lamps came on and never used a map.
From dawn to dusk
At dawn the paths are empty and wet. By noon they are full. By dusk the lanterns take over and the city goes quiet again.
Go early, go late, and skip the middle.
