We rented a wooden house with a jetty and one rule: no plans. No list of sights, no restaurant bookings, no alarms.

The first two days were uncomfortable. The third was the best day of the year.

## Boredom, then attention

Somewhere around the middle of the week the boredom turned into attention. I noticed the lake changed colour four times a day. I learned which birds came at dusk.

A trip that is allowed to be boring gives you back the part of your mind that notices things.
